About Arewa Cafeteria
Thank you for visiting Arewa Cafeteria. This is a nutrition and health platform that promotes the principles and practice of good nutrition and healthy lifestyle. We campaign on issues related to healthy nutrition and malnutrition, targeting communities in northern Nigeria through nutrition education, behavior change communication and advocacy to policy and decision-makers.
Our campaign messages particularly center around malnutrition issues in northern Nigeria. This is because of the states of the northern region, especially in the North-West and North-East, which have the greatest burden of malnutrition among pregnant and lactating mothers and children under five years in the country. The word “Arewa”, means “north” in the Hausa language. Hausa is the main language spoken in northern Nigeria.
Although malnutrition exists in every state in the country, it is highest in the north. About 2.2 million children are severely malnourished in northern Nigeria and these children need urgent attention. We advocate for all the guiding principles of infant and young child feeding, including but not limited to exclusive breastfeeding of infants from 0 to 5 months of life, complementary feeding of children from 6 months to 2 years as well as nutrition for pregnant and lactating mothers.
We educate mothers, family members and the community on the right feeding practices for infants, children, pregnant and lactating mothers. We also target our advocacy messages to policy and decision-makers to provide enough funds and other needed resources for nutrition programs and enabling environment for healthy nutrition for women and children in Nigeria.
