Coconut And Agwaluba (Agbalumo) Juice

This is the African star apple but I wrote the name as we call it in northern Nigeria "agwaluba". In the south, it goes as "agbalumo". There is diversity even in calling the same fruit! That is what makes Nigeria great.

I stumbled on agwaluba in the market recently, meaning, it is in season. Trust me, every food or fruit in season won't pass me by. I remember how we took it as kids. I would buy it, go home and add sugar in it. Then I would eat the flesh and keep the seeds away. Girls used to play with the seeds (if you are my age and grew up in the north, you know the game I am talking about). I laugh!

I have made a simple juice with agbaluba with a tint of coconut flavor.

Sip it up!

Making the Juice

Wash agwaluba very thoroughly, as it is very gummy and sticky. Remove the stalk and peel off skin. Remove the seeds.
Peel off the fleshy part and put in a blender. Add water, sugar (as desired) and one drop of coconut flavor (you may use fresh coconut if you prefer). Blend until all smooth.
Sieve out the scum. Keep in fridge to chill.

Serve and enjoy!

Special Note!

Agwaluba contains a natural "gum" that is very sticky when in contact with the skin or cooking items.
Clean your blender and other items used for juice preparation immediately after use, to prevent scum from sticking on to them. It could be very difficult to remove scum if left for long.

Use warm, soapy water to clean all utensils.
